We enter a new liturgical season and a new liturgical year.  The season of Advent is marked by many distinct features.  The most prominent are the use of the color purple and the Advent wreath.  

   The four candles of the wreath represent the four Sundays of the season.  Three of the candles are purple and one of them is rose / pink.  This pink candle is for the third Sunday of Advent commonly called Gaudete Sunday.  It is called Gaudete (which means rejoice) because that is the Latin text for the entrance antiphon. The first two weeks of the Advent season focus more on anticipation- found in the scriptures (the prophets), for Christ’s birth (and our commemoration of it), and for Christ’s return and final judgement.  The fourth Sunday’s readings tend to focus on Mary & Joseph and the events leading up to Christ’s birth.  In some Christian traditions, the candles and weeks are associated with the words hope, peace, joy, and love respectively. The characteristics do generally fit with the season and the associated Sundays, but this is not an official part of Catholic tradition and liturgical practice.  

   Historically Advent has been a season of penance and fasting similar to Lent. The standardization of the four Sundays of Advent is a more recent concept.  The Second Vatican Council(1960’s) saw Advent shift more to a season of hope and expectation especially for the second coming of Christ. 

   Liturgically the Masses are supposed to be more subdued and reflective than in ordinary time.  Most significantly, the Gloria is excluded from Advent Masses.  At Mary Queen we achieve more subdued music by using less instrumentation, chant acclamations, and more use of the organ using lighter registrations. 

   Though the Advent season is only 20-28 days long we pack a lot of special celebrations into this time.  Including the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Posadas, Advent Lessons and Carols Services, Memorial of St. Lucy, and more…  This liturgical busyness isn’t designed to add to the hectic time leading up to Christmas, but to turn our eyes more toward the true meaning (historical and spiritual) for the season.  

   At Mary Queen we have various customs to help make this season a deeper time of growth in faith.  The little blue books will be available for family use starting the first Sunday of Advent.  We have a Parish Penance Service which this year will be on Thursday December 4th at 6:30pm.  Keep our first communicants in prayer as they will be receiving their first reconciliation in December too.  Our Hispanic community has a novena leading up to Our Lady of Guadalupe which is a huge celebration at MQHR.  These are just some of the ways Advent is observed.

Adviento: tiempo de expectativa

Entramos en un nuevo tiempo litúrgico y en un nuevo año litúrgico.  El tiempo de Adviento está marcado por muchas características distintivas.  Los más destacados son el uso del color violeta y la corona de Adviento.  

   Las cuatro velas de la corona representan los cuatro domingos de la temporada.  Tres de las velas son moradas y una de ellas es rosada.  Esta vela rosa es para el tercer domingo de Adviento comúnmente llamado Domingo de Gaudete.  Se llama Gaudete (que significa regocijarse) porque ese es el texto latino de la antífona de entrada. Las primeras dos semanas de la temporada de Adviento se centran más en la anticipación, que se encuentra en las Escrituras (los profetas), en el nacimiento de Cristo (y nuestra conmemoración del mismo) y en el regreso y juicio final de Cristo.  Las lecturas del cuarto domingo tienden a centrarse en María y José y los eventos que llevaron al nacimiento de Cristo.  En algunas tradiciones cristianas, las velas y las semanas se asocian con las palabras esperanza, paz, alegría y amor, respectivamente. Las características generalmente encajan con la temporada y los domingos asociados, pero esto no es una parte oficial de la tradición católica y la práctica litúrgica.  

   Históricamente, el Adviento ha sido una temporada de penitencia y ayuno similar a la Cuaresma. La estandarización de los cuatro domingos de Adviento es un concepto más reciente.  El Concilio Vaticano Segundo (década de 1960) vio cómo el Adviento se convertía más en una temporada de esperanza y expectativa, especialmente por la segunda venida de Cristo.

Litúrgicamente, se supone que las Misas son más moderadas y reflexivas que en el tiempo ordinario.  Lo más significativo es que el Gloria está excluido de las Misas de Adviento.  En Mary Queen logramos música más tenue usando menos instrumentación, cantos de aclamación y más uso del órgano usando registros más ligeros. 

   Aunque la temporada de Adviento dura sólo 20 a 28 días, en este tiempo tenemos muchas celebraciones especiales.  Incluyendo la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción, la Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Posadas, Lecciones de Adviento y Servicios de Villancicos, Memorial de Santa Lucía y más... Este ajetreo litúrgico no está diseñado para aumentar el tiempo agitado previo a la Navidad. , sino volver la mirada más hacia el verdadero significado (histórico y espiritual) de la temporada.  

   En Mary Queen tenemos varias costumbres para ayudar a que esta temporada sea un tiempo más profundo de crecimiento en la fe.  Los libritos azules estarán disponibles para uso familiar a partir del primer domingo de Adviento.  Contamos con un Servicio de Penitencia Parroquial que este año será el jueves 5 de diciembre a las 6:30pm.  Mantenga a nuestros primeros comulgantes en oración, ya que también recibirán su primera reconciliación en diciembre.  Nuestra comunidad hispana tiene una novena previa a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, que es una gran celebración en MQHR.  Estas son sólo algunas de las formas en que se observa el Adviento.  Encuentre más en el Calendario de Adviento proporcionado en las Misas y en nuestro correo electrónico parroquial.
