This week we turn our attention to the Sacrament of Confirmation, one of the three Sacraments of Initiation along with Baptism and the Eucharist. In Confirmation, the grace first given at Baptism is strengthened and deepened through the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Church prays that those being confirmed will be sealed with the Spirit and equipped to live as faithful witnesses of Christ.

The roots of Confirmation are found in the Acts of the Apostles, when the Apostles laid hands on the baptized so they might receive the Holy Spirit. Over time, this developed into the sacramental rite we know today, ordinarily celebrated by the bishop as a sign of unity with the wider Church and apostolic tradition.

This Saturday, May 2, our parish will celebrate Confirmation at 9:30am and 1pm with Bishop John. These bilingual liturgies will welcome more than 110 youth and adults who will receive the sacrament. It is a joyful moment not only for those being confirmed, but for the entire parish community, which supports and prays for them.

During the rite, candidates renew their baptismal promises, rejecting sin and professing the faith of the Church. The bishop then extends his hands in prayer over them and anoints each candidate with Sacred Chrism, saying: “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.” This sacred anointing marks the Christian with a spiritual seal, signifying belonging to Christ and being sent forth in mission.

Confirmation is not a “graduation” from the faith, but a strengthening for lifelong discipleship. The gifts of the Holy Spirit—wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord—help the faithful to live courageously and generously in the world.

As we celebrate those receiving Confirmation, let us pray that they may be filled with the Holy Spirit and continue to grow in holiness, service, and love for the Church.

Esta semana dirigimos nuestra atención al Sacramento de la Confirmación, uno de los tres Sacramentos de Iniciación junto con el Bautismo y la Eucaristía. En la Confirmación, la gracia recibida primero en el Bautismo se fortalece y profundiza mediante el don del Espíritu Santo. La Iglesia ora para que quienes serán confirmados sean sellados con el Espíritu y capacitados para vivir como testigos fieles de Cristo.

Las raíces de la Confirmación se encuentran en los Hechos de los Apóstoles, cuando los Apóstoles imponían las manos sobre los bautizados para que recibieran el Espíritu Santo.
