Lit Candles

This is a continuation on an exploration of all the different candles we use liturgically

Altar Candles

These are the candles that are placed directly on the altar. Typically there are two candles on the altar, however we use four candles when the exposition of the blessed sacrament is occurring.  We could use six when the Bishop is presiding at Mass.  That is why there are six candles on the altar at our Cathedral.  

Our altar candles are also used as processional candles when we have enough servers and/or have special processions (Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, etc… ).  The procession candles are used in the opening procession and placed upon the altar. They are also used to accompany the procession of the Book of the Gospel from the altar to the ambo. 

The altar candles are always lit during Mass (a requirement for Mass to proceed) with one exception during the Triduum. The candles accompany the procession of the blessed sacrament out of the church and to the altar of repose (we use the gathering area). Then candles are used to accompany the adoration of the Cross during and blessed sacrament during Good Friday services.  The altar candles are not relit until during the Gloria after the old testament readings during the Easter Vigil.  This limiting of the altar candles reflects the passion and sacrifice of Christ as the light left the world for a brief time. 

Votive Candles

At our Mary and Joseph statues we have a multi-tiered stand with votive candles. People are invited to light these candles usually with specific intentions in their heart.  This historically links us to the tradition of making an offering of petition, thanksgiving, etc… While the suggested donation is used to help cover the cost of the candles it is more designed for us to offer fully our sacrifice of prayer (spiritually and physically). I find these spaces to be so peaceful locations in our church where I can sense the potent intentions of the prayers that have been offered.

Velas encendidas

Esta es una continuación de una exploración de las diferentes velas que usamos litúrgicamente.

Velas De Altar

Estas son las velas que se colocan directamente sobre el altar. Normalmente hay dos velas en el altar, sin embargo usamos cuatro velas cuando se realiza la exposición del Santísimo Sacramento. Podríamos usar seis cuando el Obispo preside la Misa. Por eso hay seis velas en el altar de nuestra Catedral.

Nuestros cirios de altar también se utilizan como cirios procesionales cuando tenemos suficientes servidores y/o tenemos procesiones especiales (Domingo de Ramos, Jueves Santo, etc…). Las velas de la procesión se utilizan en la procesión de apertura y se colocan sobre el altar. También se utilizan para acompañar la procesión del Libro del Evangelio desde el altar hasta el ambón.

Las velas del altar siempre se encienden durante la Misa (un requisito para que la Misa continúe) con una excepción durante el Triduo. Las velas acompañan la procesión del Santísimo Sacramento fuera de la iglesia hacia el altar de reposo (usamos el área de reunión). Luego se utilizan velas para acompañar la adoración de la Cruz y el Santísimo Sacramento durante los servicios del Viernes Santo. Las velas del altar no se vuelven a encender hasta durante el Gloria después de las lecturas del Antiguo Testamento durante la Vigilia Pascual. Esta limitación de los cirios del altar refleja la pasión y el sacrificio de Cristo cuando la luz abandonó el mundo por un breve tiempo.

Velas Votivas

Junto a nuestras estatuas de María y José tenemos un soporte de varios niveles con velas votivas. Se invita a las personas a encender estas velas generalmente con intenciones específicas en su corazón. Esto nos vincula históricamente a la tradición de hacer una ofrenda de petición, acción de gracias, etc… Si bien la donación sugerida se utiliza para ayudar a cubrir el costo de las velas, está más diseñada para que ofrezcamos plenamente nuestro sacrificio de oración (espiritual y físicamente). . Considero que estos espacios son lugares tan pacíficos en nuestra iglesia donde puedo sentir las potentes intenciones de las oraciones que se han ofrecido.
