Sacristans are individuals who tend to take care of the behind the scenes preparations and needs of the liturgy.  The title comes from the Latin root sacer which means holy and sacred.  Sacristans care for the holy vessels, elements, and materials of the church.  

Historically Sacristans were a part of the order(pre-ordination) of doorkeepers who were stewards of the church and its materials.  This order no longer exists formally, but for centuries sacristans have kept things running smoothly for the church’s liturgies.  

GIRM 105 says:  "The following also exercise a liturgical function: The sacristan, who carefully arranges the liturgical books, the vestments, and other things necessary in the celebration of Mass." 

What is unsaid here is that this can include oils, wine, cruets, water, hosts, linens, candles, laundry, bells, polishing, refinishing, books, furnishings, as well as keeping the sacristy neat, tidy, and reverent and even more…   This is a lot to ask of a single person so there is a certain flexibility in how these responsibilities can be divided among clergy, staff, and lay volunteers.  

At Mary Queen, our sacristans are primarily charged with setting out the liturgical books and placing the materials for Mass on the altar and credence table (small table in the altar area).   Generally, they come 30 minutes or more before Mass and frequently assist Eucharistic Ministers during Mass as needed.  If you are interested in serving as a sacristan at Mary Queen please contact Paul Dryer at [email protected]  This includes Sunday and Daily Masses.  This is particularly suited for detail-oriented people who may like to avoid the spotlight.

Sacristanes: administradores de la misa 
Los sacristanes son personas que tienden a encargarse de los preparativos y necesidades de la liturgia entre bastidores.  El título proviene de la raíz latina sacer que significa santo y sagrado.  Los sacristanes cuidan los vasos, elementos y materiales sagrados de la iglesia.  

Históricamente los sacristanes eran parte de la orden (pre ordenación) de porteros que eran mayordomos de la iglesia y sus materiales. Esta orden ya no existe formalmente, pero durante siglos los sacristanes han mantenido el buen funcionamiento de las liturgias de la iglesia.  

IGRM 105 dice: "Ejercen también función litúrgica: El sacristán, que dispone cuidadosamente los libros litúrgicos, las vestiduras y demás cosas necesarias en la celebración de la Misa". 

Lo que no se dice aquí es que esto puede incluir aceites, vino, vinagreras, agua, hostias, ropa de cama, velas, lavandería, campanas, pulido, acabado, libros, muebles, así como mantener la sacristía limpia, ordenada y reverente y aún más. … Esto es mucho pedir a una sola persona, por lo que existe cierta flexibilidad en cómo se pueden dividir estas responsabilidades entre el clero, el personal y los voluntarios laicos.
