This Sunday we kick off the month of honoring Mary with a Parish-wide May Crowning right after the 11am Mass (around 12:15pm) at the outdoor Mary Statue (weather permitting).  This is a tradition at our parish and school and many others.  How did this tradition come to be?  Catholics have honored Mary from the beginning of Christendom, but probably not to the degree that modern Catholics do.   ++ Este domingo iniciamos el mes de honrar a María con una Coronación de mayo en toda la parroquia justo después de la Misa de las 11 a. m. (alrededor de las 12:15 p. m.) en la Estatua de María al aire libre (si el clima lo permite). Esta es una tradición en nuestra parroquia, escuela y muchas otras. ¿Cómo surgió esta tradición? Los católicos han honrado a María desde el comienzo de la cristiandad, pero probablemente no en la medida en que lo hacen los católicos modernos.

We have many ways of decorating our church.  Some are permanent- stained glass, statues, paintings, banners, etc.., but some, like flowers last for a shorter period of time.  In the Easter Season we are treated to a feast of flowers that enhance our space and reflect the abundant life given to us through the Resurrection.  They are made a more potent addition to the church due to the austerity of Lent (like springs rebirth from winter).   ++ Tenemos muchas formas de decorar nuestra iglesia. Algunas son permanentes: vidrieras, estatuas, pinturas, pancartas, etc., pero otras, como las flores, duran menos tiempo. En la temporada de Pascua somos obsequiados con un festín de flores que realzan nuestro espacio y reflejan la vida abundante que se nos ha dado a través de la Resurrección. Se convierten en una adición más potente a la iglesia debido a la austeridad de la Cuaresma (como la primavera que renace del invierno).

Over the past several years at Mary Queen we have had an increase in the number of young people needing to be baptized after turning seven years old. This presents some interesting challenges as the Church considers people age seven(the age of reason) and above to be part of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (called Christian Initiation at Mary Queen) before they can be baptized.   However the full age of maturity in the eyes of the church is age 14, so we have a gap for ages 7-14 where those who want to enter the church need additional support of adults and specialized preparation for baptism, confirmation, and first communion. Prior to age seven children can be baptized at the will of their parents and support of their Godparents and the other sacraments occur when they get older. + Durante los últimos años en Mary Queen hemos tenido un aumento en el número de jóvenes que necesitan ser bautizados después de cumplir siete años. Esto presenta algunos desafíos interesantes ya que la Iglesia considera que las personas de siete años (la edad de la razón) y mayores son parte del Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos (llamado Iniciación Cristiana en Mary Queen) antes de que puedan ser bautizados. Sin embargo, la edad plena de madurez a los ojos de la iglesia es los 14 años, por lo que tenemos una brecha entre las edades de 7 a 14 años donde aquellos que desean ingresar a la iglesia necesitan apoyo adicional de adultos y preparación especializada para el bautismo, la confirmación y la primera comunión. . During this Easter Season we are having a series of sacramental Masses here at Mary Queen.  These Masses are all parts of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) through which people become full members of the Catholic Church.  Depending on how you entered the church, you may have received these sacraments in differing order. + Durante esta temporada de Pascua tendremos una serie de Misas sacramentales aquí en Mary Queen. Todas estas Misas son parte de los Sacramentos de Iniciación (Bautismo, Confirmación y Eucaristía) a través de los cuales las personas se convierten en miembros plenos de la Iglesia Católica. Dependiendo de cómo ingresó a la iglesia, es posible que haya recibido estos sacramentos en diferente orden.

We have made it to the biggest celebration of the liturgical year-Easter. How do we distinguish and celebrate it?  It’s so big in fact that we changed the day of worship in Judeo-Christian tradition from Saturday(Sabbath) to Sunday, the day of resurrection. Another term for Sundays throughout the year are “little Easters.”  We recognize this in that Sundays don’t count as part of the forty days of the Lent (some people don’t apply their lenten fasting to Sundays).  + Hemos llegado a la celebración más grande del año litúrgico: la Pascua. ¿Cómo lo distinguimos y celebramos? De hecho, es tan grande que cambiamos el día de adoración en la tradición judeocristiana del sábado (sábado) al domingo, el día de la resurrección. Otro término para los domingos durante todo el año son “pequeñas Pascuas”. Reconocemos esto en que los domingos no cuentan como parte de los cuarenta días de la Cuaresma (algunas personas no aplican su ayuno cuaresmal a los domingos).

Palm Sunday of the Passion of Our Lord is a unique celebration in our tradition.  Being the only obligatory celebration of passion week, it bears the responsibility of both the triumphal entry to Jerusalem and the agony of the passion.  It’s almost liturgical whiplash to go from loud clanging hosannas to in less than five minutes “My God, my God why have you forsaken me” from the stark Psalm 22. I imagine this disorientation echoes what the disciples experienced that week.  + El Domingo de Ramos de la Pasión de Nuestro Señor es una celebración única en nuestra tradición. Al ser la única celebración obligatoria de la Semana de la Pasión, conlleva la responsabilidad tanto de la entrada triunfal a Jerusalén como de la agonía de la Pasión. Es casi un latigazo litúrgico pasar de fuertes hosannas a, en menos de cinco minutos, “Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has desamparado” del crudo Salmo 22. Me imagino que esta desorientación hace eco de lo que los discípulos experimentaron esa semana.

The Season of Lent is not only a season of penance, austerity, and sacrifice. Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary Church is seeking a dynamic Youth and Young Adult Coordinator as an integral part of our Formation Team, beginning July 1, 2024. The coordinator will be responsible for programs which nurture lively understanding and engagement in the Catholic Faith during adolescence, leading to lifelong commitment to practice of life in Christ and the Church as young adults.

Everywhere we turn during the beginning of Lent, we hear of fasting, abstinence, and almsgiving from the church.  How is our liturgy impacted by this time of austerity?  There are things that the church asks of us and we also have our more local parish-wide customs.  ++ Dondequiera que vayamos durante el comienzo de la Cuaresma, escuchamos sobre el ayuno, la abstinencia y la limosna por parte de la iglesia. ¿Cómo se ve afectada nuestra liturgia por este tiempo de austeridad? The biggest and most important candle we have is the Paschal Candle.  It is lit at the beginning of the Easter Vigil from a flame (usually outdoors).  It is ornately decorated with a cross, the letters for Alpha and Omega/the numbers of the current year (representing the intersection of the eternal and the present), and finally five grains of incense (a symbol of sacrifice, the presence of God, and rising prayers). READ MORE! + El cirio más grande e importante que tenemos es el Cirio Pascual. Se enciende al comienzo de la Vigilia Pascual con una llama (normalmente al aire libre). “What are you giving up for Lent?” Over the years I’ve had more than one non-Catholic friend (or Catholics who don’t practice) ask me that question. Some of them do it with considerable eye-rolling, others asked it as a sincere way to practice a spirituality they find valuable. I prefer the question “How are you observing Lent?” because adjusting our reliance on things is one way to create a new spiritual discipline. I haven’t made my final decision about how I’ll observe Lent, but whatever I do, I want it to be a sacrifice for me and a benefit to the earth. (READ MORE)

When you enter a Catholic church, compared to most other churches, you will often find many unattended and lit candles-a rare sight in this world of insurance regulations. We could intuit that candles are an essential part of our faith. + Cuando ingresa a una iglesia católica, en comparación con la mayoría de las otras iglesias, encontrará muchas velas encendidas y desatendidas, algo poco común en este mundo de regulaciones de seguros. If you have looked in a Missal (collection of the readings assigned by liturgical day) you may have noticed a text for Entrance and Communion.
